Adult male (winter and breeding plumage): Head and upper neck chestnut with slight purplish gloss. Breast, lower neck, fore-back, rump, upper and under tail coverts, black. Back and scapulars, sides and flanks, finely barred black and white, giving grey appearance. Wing coverts grey. Speculum paler grey with narrow white border. Forepart of abdomen white, hind part crossed by fine greyish lines. Eye yellow. Bill pale bluish with whitish ring behind black tip. Legs and feet bluish grey.
