A very large tern with heavy coral-red bill, black cap (only slightly crested, black nuchal feathers with blunt tips), black feet, and only slightly forked tail, the outermost feather not greatly elongated. By late summer the forehead and crown become heavily streaked with white (winter plumage). Immatures similar to winter adults but upper parts mottled with dusky; bill, dull orange.
