Adults in summer with black head, reddish-brown bill; in winter mainly white head with dark ear patch and often a slaty patch on hind crown. Adults at all seasons are identifiable in flight by dark upper side of primaries. First-year birds have underside of wing white, a black ear-spot and a black terminal band; in flight a blackish bar diagonally across the upper surface of wing, which continues around the bend of wing to join the base of the black primaries and shows extensive black in wing tips.
