Tern, Sooty (Provincial Rarety)
-Sterna fuscata (Linnaeus)
Contrasting black upper parts and white under parts are entirely unlike those of any tern in regular occurence in Canada. Tail well forked. Forehead (and narrow extension back to top of eye) and under parts white; crown, hind neck, broad line eye to bill, and rest of upper parts black (except outermost tail feathers mostly grey to whitish); bill and legs black. Young are brown above and slightly paler below; freathers of back, tipped white.
