Adult male (winter): Head and neck mainly white with grey cheeks and a large dark-brown patch extending form a rear of cheek to side of upper neck. Back, rump, upper tail coverts and breast brownish black. Wing blackish with brown speculum. Scapulars slender, pointed, pearl grey. Wing linings greyish brown. Lower belly to tail white becoming grey on sides. and flanks. Tail with two central feathers very long, slender, pointed; rest of tail feathers dusky, edged with white, outermost with increasing extent of white. Eye variable, brown to reddish brown. Bill, basal half and nail blackish, pinkish near tip. Legs and feet bluish grey.
