-Ixobrychus exilis (Gmelin)

Adult male: Top of head, back and tail, black. Back of neck, larger wing coverts and outer webs of inner secondaries, chestnut. Rest of wing coverts, brownish yellow. Primaries slaty. Throat whitish. Sides of head, sides of neck and under parts, pale buff with a blackish-brown patch on either side of breast. Wing lining yellowish white. Bill mostly yellow with dark ridge. Legs greenish. Adult female: Similar, but the blacks of the upper parts are mostly replaced by dark chestnut. Two buffy lines down back. Throat and under parts streaked with brown.
