Adults: mantle pearl grey. Wing tips black, each feather tipped white; outermost primary with large white spot usually separated from white tip by a narrow, sometimes broken, black bar; ninth primary with or without a small white spot; a tongue of grey extends out from base of primaries usually not reaching white spot on either ninth or tenth primaries. Head, neck, tail and under parts white. Bill yellow with red spot on lower mandible; iris yellow, occasionally lightly freckled with brown; eye ring yellow-orange; legs pinkish flesh. First-year birds are mottled brown in general colour with plain dark-brown wing tips, dark bill and brown irides.
