-Sitta carolinensis Latham
Bill straight or slightly uptilted, slender, pointed; tail short, as in other nuthatches. Top of head and back of neck black (in females, black of crown usually more or less mixed with grey); back and rump pale bluish-grey; two central tail feathers plain bluish-grey, others black with much white toward tips, sides of head (to above eye), sides of neck, and under parts white; with chestnut on thighs and on under tail coverts.
