Gull, Great Black-backed
-Larus marinus Linnaeus
A very large gull with distinctive black mantle. In winter, white of head lightly streaked with dusky. Immatures are separated from other eastern gulls by large size and large heavy bill. First year birds show more white in the tail, particularly the outer feathers and the upper and under parts are paler. Full adult plumage is not assumed until at least the fourth year, but the first few black feathers begin to appear in the mantle the second year.
