More robust generally than our native sparrow with relatively heavy, strong bill.
Adult male: Top of head, nape and rump grey; chestnut patch from eye to nape and broadening over side of neck; small white spot behind eye; patch between eye and base of bill black; back streaked with black, buff and chestnut; wings with white bar; tail all dark brown with narrow buffy edging; throat and middle of breast black; ear coverts grey; jaw and sides of neck whitish; rest of under parts greyish white, the sides and flanks grey or buffy grey; under tail coverts tinged with buffy brown; bill black; legs brownish.
