A very large heavy-billed gull with white wing tips in adults and nearly white in immatures. Aduts with pale-grey mantle, rest of plumage including wing tips immaculate white. First-year immatures are extensively marked with pale greys and buffs, the wing tips slighlty paler. Second-year birds are extremely pale, sometimes almost white.
