Adults: top of head light brown steaked with black and divided by a median stripe of grey; back, scapulars, rump and upper tail coverts olive brown streaked with black, most heavily on the back; edges of flight feathers rusty brown; tail greyish brown, the two central feathers with a dusky median stripe; stripe over eye and sides of neck greyish; cheek patch margined above and below by a narrow dark-brown streak; malar region buffy; band across breast, sides and flanks, buffy streaked with black; throat and abdomen white; bill dusky above, bluish below, also often a little yellowish; legs brownish flesh.
