Adult: Crown chestnut, forehead grey and black; back and scapulars light brown streaked with black; rump grey; broad stripe over eye, also chin and throat whitish; through eye a narrow black stripe; rest of sides of head and remainder of under parts plain grey; wings with two inconspicuous whitish bars; tail dusky with no white patches; bill blackish in spring but with base of lower mandible paler, in autumn lower mandible mostly flesh colour; legs pale brown or flesh.
