Adults: top of head, streak extending back from eye to small ear patch, and (usually) small steak across jaw, chestnut; rest of head and neck grey, hind-neck tinged with rusty; rest of under parts greyish white, unstreaked but with a dusky spot in centre of breast, a small chestnut patch on each side of breast, sides buffy brown; back and scapulars streaked with black, buffy and brown; rump plain brown; wings with two conspicuous white bars; tail plain dusky with outer edge of outermost feather greyish white; upper mandible and tip of lower mandible dusky, rest of lower mandible yellow; legs pale brownish; feet blackish.
