Top of head with two broad stripes of black, separated by a broad median stripe of white; black of crown reaches down to cover upper half of lores (but not in most western races; see subspecies); a narrow black line extends from eye to back of nape with a broader band of white above it; rest of face, sides of neck, and breast plain grey becoming whitish on throat and abdomen and becoming greyish buffy on sides and flanks; back and scapulars light grey broadly streaked with brown; rump and upper tail coverts pale brownish; wings with two white bars, tail dark brown, bill reddish or pinkish brown; legs flesh colour to brown.
