Adult (spring and summer): Top of head, nape, front of face, chin, and throat black, which extends as streaks or spots to the mid-breast; sides of head behind eye mostly grey with small black patch just behind ear region; remainder of upper parts brown, the back and scapulars streaked with black; two white wing bars; tail greyish brown, its out feathers often more narrowly tipped with white; under parts (except black throat and mid-breast) white, the sides and flanks buffy, streaked with pinkish brown; legs pale brown.
