Bill conical. Adults (slightly paler in breeding season than in winter): Upper parts greyish brown or brownish grey, streaked with dusky; eye-ring whitish; cheek patch brownish; lesser wing coverts reddish brown; two vague buffy wing bars; tail mostly dark brown, the outermost feather on each side and one feather, sometimes two, next to it with some white; under parts dull white; the side of throat, breast, sides and flanks streaked with dusky, sometimes tinged with buffy; bill mostly dusky or brownish above, flesh colour below; legs flesh colour.
