Adult male (breeding plumage): Head and breast black, except a broad white or buffy stripe behind eye, this stripe extending downward on sides of neckand sides of breast; hind-neck chestnut; back and scapulars buffy, heavily striped with black; tail mostly blackish brown, the outermost feathers on each side largely white terminally, the next feather with only a little white near the tip; under parts, posterior to black breast, white, the sides and flanks streaked with black; bill yellow with dusky tip; legs blackish.
