Grebe, Pied-billed
-Podilymbus podiceps (Linnaeus)

A small grebe with a very stout bill, its ridge decidely downcurved. In breeding plumage, adults have a black throat patch and a blackish band-like spot on the bill. In winter the black areas on throat and bill are lacking, but the stubby hen-like bill shape is always diagnostic. In flight it shows no well-defined white patches in the wing.
