Bill longer and more slender than that of redpolls and goldfinches. Tail slightly forked. Sexes similar in appearance. Upper parts greyish brown streaked with dusky, paler on rump; wings and tail dusky with narrow yellowish or white edging; bases of wing and tail feathers yellow (often concealed), usually showing as a small wing patch; two whitish or buffy wing bars; under parts dull white streaked (except on belly) with dusky.
