Adult male: General colouration dull red, the feathers with grey bases, the grey showing through in many places; nasal tufts and narrow line in front of eye blackish; back with dusky feather centres; scapulars mostly greyish; wings and tail dusky, the tertials and some secondaries edged with white; two white wings bars; abdomen, much of sides and flanks grey; under tail coverts greyish centrally with whitish margins; bill blackish, often paler at base of lower mandible; legs black.
