Adult male: head and under parts black, some of the feathers of flanks, abdomen and under tail coverts edges with buff; large buff patch on back of neck; upper back black streaked with buffy; rest of back, rump, upper tail coverts and scapulars pale grey to whitish; wing and tail black with yellowish edging; bill black; legs brown.

Adult female: Upper parts, buffy olive streaked with black; top of head with central pale streak, bordered on either side by a broad blackish or brownish stripe; sides of head yellowish olive with narrow blackish streak extending backward form eye; wing and tail dusky, edged with yellow-olive; under parts plain yellowish-olive, the sides flanks and under tail coverts streak with black; bill brown, darkestt near tip; legs brown.
