Adult male (breeding plumage: midwinter, spring, early summer): Glossy blackish with purple and green reflections, wings and tail blackish edged with buff; some buffy spots on back usually retained from winter plumage; bill mainly yellow, but base of lower mandible dark grey or bluish, iris brown, legs reddish brown. Adult male (winter plumage: late summer-early winter): Similar to adult male in breeding plumage but upper parts with numerous buffy spots, under parts with many white spots; bill mainly dusky.
