A large grebe. Bill straight or slightly downcurved, tapering to a point, rather long and slender; yellowish in colour. In summer adults the conspicuous whitish cheeks and throat and chestnut-red neck are a combination that instantly separates this species from other grebes. Winter plummage is very different and like most grebes the Red-necked has grey upper parts and white under parts. In flight the wing shows two patches of white - one in front near where it joins the body, the other along the hind edge.
