-Picoides pubescens (Linnaeus)
A small black and white woodpecker with broad white stripe down middle of back, rather short bill (shorter than head) and in the adult male a small bright-red bar on back of head. Young only shortly out of the nest often have red, yellow, or white spots on the crown. South coastal British Columbia populations have the white under parts tinged with smoky brown. Colour and markings like Hairy Woodpecker, but very much smaller size and much shorter bill (shorter than head) easily distinguish it in the hand. Our smallest woodpecker.
