Head rather large without ear tufts, facial disc distinctly heart-shaped, eyes black and not large, lower legs and toes scantily feathered. Adults of both sexes and immatures similar in colouration. Upper parts mainly buffy, back to top of head frosted over with greyish and spotted with blackish and greyish; under parts variable from tawny to white, without any bars or stripes, but finely spotted or speckled with black.
