Legs feathered to toes.
Pale Phase (commoner in most locatities): the adult male generally (not always) differs from the adult female in having abdomen barred rather than blotched or patches with dark brown, and his tail tends to have several narrow dark bands on the posterior half alternating with whitish.
Dark phase: uniform blackish-brown above and below, but usually with some concealed white on basal third of tail and some light barring on rest of tail. Tail tipped whitish. Primaries usually have some white on inner webs, and there is considerable and variable white on under wing surface.
