Bill short. No hind toe. Front toes partly webbed, including small web at base of inner and middle toes. Adults (spring and summer) Narrow black patch from base of bill to cheeks. Black bar above white forehead. Upper parts brown. Black breast band on otherwise white under parts. Legs and base of bill, rich yellow. Tip of bill black.

Autumn adults and young: Similar but black areas replaced by dark brown. Young have black bills.
