Adults in breeding plumage are unmistakable with roundish black spots on the white under parts and a slightly metallic lustre to the greyish-brown upper parts. Autumn birds have unspotted white under parts, shading to grey on upper breast, and narrow dusky bars on wing coverts. Separable from Solitary Sandpiper by all-white axillars.
