Ruff (Local Rarety)
-Philomachus pugnax (Linnaeus)
Bill about as long as head, slightly tapering when viewed from the side. Adult male in breeding plumage is exceedingly variable in colour but is unmistakable by its extraordinary ruff (an erectile shield of feathers on the neck) and by two broad ear-tufts. The shield may be black (with purplish gloss), brown, white, and various combinations.
