-Catoptrophorus semipalmatus (Gmelin)
A large grey-and-white shorebird with bill straight and slightly longer than head, white upper tail coverts, and very broad white band across the wing, contrasting with the blackish flight feathers. The wing markings are diagnostic in any plumage. American Oystercatcher and Avocet are other large shorebirds with much white in the wings, but the bill and markings of both are very different.
