Spring Migration

Monthly Summaries of Spring Migrants

Although sometimes beginning in late January, the migration of horned larks is often heavy through February with nesting activity is not unusual by month's end. Another February nester is the great horned owl which regularly lays its eggs while winter is still with us.

Many of the species listed for early and mid-March are potential late February migrants (often in large numbers) if there has been prolonged, mild weather. Canada geese and ring-billed gulls, however, are likely to be found by month's end even without a significant warming trend.
