Part 1 - Life in a Great Lakes Marsh
Students will become nature detectives looking for evidence of life in the Marsh. As they tour the 1 km boardwalk with a park interpreter, they will have the opportunity to touch, feel and smell the life around them. From the safety of a stable platform, they'll scoop water looking for bugs. They'll also hunt for turtles, find carnivorous plants and listen for the animals hiding in the cattails.
Hikes are tailored specifically to the appropriate grade level.
- In Grade One the focus is on animal life in the Marsh and how this habitat meets their needs.
- For Grade Two students we will focus on the interactions between the marsh animals and their environment.
- In Grade Three, the focus is on plant-life in the marsh and the unique features of aquatic plants.
- By Grade Four, we'll be putting all these concepts together, building food chains and looking at the interactions between plants and animals in their habitats.
Part 2 - The Visitor Centre and Trip to the Tip
A park interpreter will greet your bus at the Visitor Centre for the other half of the program. You'll get a short tour of the exhibits focusing on the diorama of life in the park. Children will then move to the theatre to see the introductory film, "Keep the Songs Alive". After the film, you'll be escorted to the open air shuttle that will take you to the Tip. After a short ride, your class will be free to explore the Tip area on your own. The shuttle runs on a regular schedule, so you'll never wonder when the next one will arrive. When you return to the Visitor Centre, take time to visit the gift store and explore the Children's Discovery area, before you return to school.

What to Bring
Our programs run rain or shine so dress for the weather. The Marsh Boardwalk has limited shade so a sun hat and sunscreen are musts in June. Fortunately, there are very few mosquitoes around the Marsh in the daytime, so bug repellent is not usually required. Students are encouraged to wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes that are suitable for walking distances.
Don't forget your lunch! There are great picnic facilities at the Marsh Boardwalk and around the Visitor Centre for your class to use. We challenge you and your students to bring garbage-less lunches, though all picnic areas are equipped with garbage and recycling facilities.
