Meet the mating balls
The Red-Sided Garter Snake
© J.Jaque - Parks Canada
Watch the Red-sided Garter Snakes emerge from their most northernly hibernacula in karst fissures and caves to form mating balls. The snakes emerge in early may to mate and disperse to marshes and ponds to feed off frogs and leeches before they return to the hibernacula in Late August. The mating balls phenomenon can be witnessed from late April to late May
From May 18th to 20th from 1pm to 4pm, a guide-interpreter will be at the Snake Pit at the Salt River Day Use Area to assist visitors who would like to see and hold a Red-Sided Garter Snake. Come see, touch and learn about Red-Sided Garter Snakes.
