As a cross-country skier, you have the opportunity to explore areas within Gros Morne National Park that are barely accessible during the summer months.
Before you head out:
- Always let someone know where you are going, when you are expected back, and how many people are in your party. This is particularly important if you are skiing off-trail.
- Choose a route according to your physical condition, skiing abilities, difficulty of the trail, and the time that you have at your disposal.
- Check the weather forecast. (The ski season in Gros Morne usually extends from mid January to early April. Average daily temperatures for Rocky Harbour are -6° C in January, -8° C in February and -5° C in March. Winds here are strong, and can lower the temperature by many degrees. Wind-chill is an important factor to consider while dressing.)
- Be sure to check the condition of your equipment, bring a repair kit, a first aid kit, and more than enough food and clothing. Dress in layers to control heat and reduce perspiration, this is essential to avoid hypothermia .
- Be sure to leave enough time to return before sunset and always ski with a friend.
- Dogs are not permitted on groomed trails. They damage the track and present a hazard to both wildlife and other skiers.
Winter camping is permitted at Green Point campground. There is an enclosed kitchen shelter with a wood stove and vault toilets.
The Gros Morne Co-op Association , in cooperation with Parks Canada, has established two secluded backcountry ski huts for your winter adventure pleasure in Gros Morne National Park.
The Owl trail at the Visitor Centre is lit until 10:00 pm daily. For additional information on ski trail conditions or ski passes, please contact the Visitor Centre at the number below or the Adminstration Office at 458-2417.
