Approximately 36 weeks per year
From $23.97 to $26.06 per hour (currently under review)
Resource Conservation, Banff Field Unit

Summary of Duties: Provides a comprehensive horse herd care and training program within Banff Field Unit, directly and with support staff, including maintenance of related facilities and equipment in support of Resource Conservation and Visitor Experience activities. Instructs and assesses Parks Canada staff and external personnel in horsemanship and riding skills; coordinates matching/deployment of horses. Provides logistical support for backcountry patrols, backcountry cabins and facilities.

Screening Criteria:

EDUCATION: Secondary school diploma or Public Services Commission approved

LANGUAGE: English Essential

EXPERIENCE:

  • Providing daily horse herd management (appropriate feeding, monitoring of horse health, injury treatment);
  • Maintaining current & complete records on horses (i.e. gentling, shoeing, training, health issues & treatment, feed requirement);
  • Implementing a budget related to horse herd care and related facilities;
  • Recommending specifications for contracts, service and supply requests (i.e. horseshoeing and specialized feed procurement);
  • Providing training and seasoning of young horses and remedial training of problem/difficult horses in preparation for riding and utility use. Instructing horse ‘schools’, assessing candidate competency, and providing hands-on coaching;
  • Performing repair and maintenance on horse-related facilities, buildings, corrals, water systems, gates and fences using basic carpentry and welding techniques;
  • Transporting horses and coordinating schedules in support of field work conducted by other sections.

Note: Preference may be given to those with farrier certification, leather-working skills, and/or experience or certification in teaching equestrian skills.

Operational Requirements:

  • Obtain and maintain a Reliability status;
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s Licence.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Willingness to work week-ends, holidays, shifts, and overtime;
  • Willingness to travel and work in a variety of climatic and geographical conditions in Banff Field Unit;
  • Willingness to wear identifier clothing, safety equipment and follow safety procedures;
  • Willing and able to perform strenuous physical activity effectively and safely.
