Yoho National Park

What to See

Yoho National Park boasts towering rock walls, spectacular waterfalls and 28 peaks over 3 000 metres in height. The word “Yoho” is a Cree expression of awe and wonder.

1. Spiral Tunnels Viewpoint and Kicking Horse Pass National Historic Site

   

• 8 km (5 min) east of Field
• Services: scenic viewpoint, wheelchair accessible, interpretive exhibit
• Connect with century old history! Discover how the Spiral Tunnels reduce the rail grade and make transcontinental rail travel safe.
• Stop by the Visitor Centre to learn more about the tunnels when the viewpoint is closed in the winter.
• Closed October to April due to snow.

2. Yoho Valley Road

      

• 5 km (3 min) east of Field
• Services: scenic viewpoint, wheelchair accessible, picnic tables, hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing, hostel
• Drive or bike steep, tight switchbacks to Takakkaw Falls. Reward yourself by standing at the base of the thundering waters of one of the highest waterfalls in Canada.
• NOTE: Trailers must be left in the parking lot across from Monarch Campground.
• Closed October to June due to snow.

3. Emerald Lake Road

         

• 2 km (1 min) west of Field
• Services: scenic viewpoint, wheelchair accessible, picnic tables, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, interpretive exhibits, accommodation, restaurant
• Discover a jewel of the Canadian Rockies as you paddle, walk or ski around the magnificent Emerald Lake.
• On your way out, stop at the Natural Bridge and admire the irresistible force of water cascading under a natural rock bridge.

4. Burgess Shale Fossil Beds

   

• Services: scenic viewpoint, guided hikes, interpretive exhibits
• Hike to the world’s most significant fossils! Choose from two exciting hikes available from late June to early September.
• Explore the interactive Burgess Shale exhibits at the Visitor Centre and Emerald Lake.

5. Wapta Falls

   

• 22 km (30 min) west of Field
• Services: scenic viewpoint, picnic tables, hiking, cross-country skiing
• Take a gentle 2.4 km hike to these impressive falls.
• "Wapta" means "river" in the Sioux language of the Stoney people.

6. Biking

   

• Services: scenic viewpoint, biking
• Enjoy a day exploring the park by bike with your family as you ride past towering peaks, river confluences and fascinating geological features on the old Kicking Horse to Amiskwi, Ross Lake or Great Divide forested roads.
