Grade 5 students participate in a full day of discovery in the “Wetland Wonders” program. These modules take Canadian geography beyond the political divisions and introduces students to the terrestrial eco-zones that shape Canada’s landscape. Students explore the wonderful world of wetlands found in Elk Island National Park as they can participate in field studies at two very different wetland locations.
“The Bog” Field Study
If this is a wetland…where is the water? Explore this question with Parks Canada staff as they lead this 1 hour field study of a bog ecosystem. Through experiments and activities, students study the characteristics of this type of wetland and how it relates to the diversity of wetlands in Elk Island!
“The Living Waters” Pond Field Study
Get out of the classroom and get your hands dirty! This module connects students to a marsh wetland where they learn about the characteristics of marshes and examine the relationships between species in this rich ecosystem through demonstration and activities. Students even get to discover the creatures that call the pond home up close.

d) Identify the roles of different organisms in the food-web of a pond: producers, consumers and decomposers
e) Recognize that changes in a part of an environment have effects on the whole environment
