Herpwatch

Welcome to Herpwatch, a survey for amphibians and reptiles in Banff, Kootenay, and Yoho National Parks, and Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site. Herptiles, meaning both amphibians and reptiles, are an important link in the global web of life and are part of the precious biodiversity in the Canadian mountain national parks. However, they are disappearing from around the world. We need to know more about the distribution of these animals in the Canadian mountain national parks. Participate in this survey and help us see the mountain herptile picture more clearly.

Three kinds of frogs, two toads, two salamander, and two kinds of snakes live in the mountain national parks. Another frog species may be locally extinct. Use the descriptions on the following pages to distinguish each species. Wherever you go in the parks, take this guide with you. Fill out the date form on this brochure as fully as possible. Please do not handle any animals - for your sake and theirs.
