Sirmilik National Park and its surrounding region has a rich legacy of cultural resources that tell the story of human occupation of the area – a story that dates back thousands of years. The northern landscape reveals evidence of early Thule winter houses sunk slightly below ground level with platforms for sleeping and food preparation. The dwellings were covered with whale bones supporting skins and sod.
