[Text on screen: In any long-running story, there are some points in that story – events, or specific days – that are more significant than others. In the story of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and the Nuu-chah-nulth people of Vancouver Island, August 6th, 2011 is one of those days.]

Tyson Touchie (Chief’s Speaker, Ucluelet First Nation): We would like to welcome you ashore, welcome you to Kwisitis. Our hosts have some ceremony for you, and we would like to feed you. We would also like to acknowledge that you’re the first canoes in Kwisitis in about 70 years! Come ashore!

[Text on screen: In January 2006, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve began the process of re-designing its interpretive centre on Wickaninnish Beach.]

[Text on screen: Parks Canada sought out consultation from First Nation partners, forming the Nuu-chah-nulth Working Group – a group dedicated to accurately representing the cultural and natural landscape of the area, within the newly designed centre.]

TT: The name itself – why we’re celebrating – has gone through its own evolution to get back to where we are today.

TT: We were talking about how our great-grandfathers would’ve called it Kwisitis. I think it’s a really neat process how we’re back here today to be calling it Kwisitis and educating our kids, our visitors, ...

...all of our guests that come here that they’re in one of our very special villages. So for us, a really happy day.

Anne Mack: The biggest accomplishment I would say would be the product, I mean the place itself that we’ve built over the years with all of the history and language and stories that were put together and brought to the centre as it is now is so exciting.

AM: To me, my own feeling of the project was that we all, as a group, learned together. We had this yearning to be learning about our history and putting it into language.

Barbara Touchie: The language is getting lost and now we’re preserving it and I think it’s great, the project that we did.

TT: We’ve always talked about planning for our grand-children and their grand-children.

I think the relationship with Parks Canada and his territory, his (Ha’hoot’li) as what we say in our language has been one where, that has happened where we’ve conserved all of the resources for future use.

Silva Johansson: One of the things that we really wanted to try to do when we were thinking about what themes we wanted to highlight in the centre was how to connect people to this place and in particular, connect them to all the different layers of story that’s here.

SJ: I mean, there’s the park itself which a lot of people will see when they come here but we wanted to go a little bit deeper and find out, what’s the human story? How do the stories of the sea and the sky and the ocean and the people who have always been here and the people who came after – how do they all interconnect and interweave and that’s what we were trying to work on.

[Text on screen: The developments to the KwisitisVisitor Centre would not have been possible without the contributions of the Federal Government of Canada, or the tireless efforts and dedication of Parks Canada Staff and the Nuu-chah-nulth Working Group in the past five years.]
