Images and interview of volunteers helping the Banff National Park Trail crew rehabilitate some trails on Trail Tuesday. With music. Tina Barzo - Audio So today we have volunteers up on Tunnel Mountain Trail helping trail crew with taking care of some of the shortcuts that you see when you hike up Tunnel Mountain. Volunteers hiking uphill Craig Sheppard Audio First, we'll get some people raking and then just trying to scarify to put some seeds down in the places where the trails are worn, we want to actually try and move the material back up onto the trail so that it's not a flat trail that's inviting to walk on, it's more of a continuous slope. text - music "Tell Somebody" - Alex Beroza Text Craig Sheppard - Banff National Park - Trail Crew Volunteers working with tools on Tunnel Mountain trail Tina Barzo Audio They'll be people that have the rakes and they're nailing down the mats. Craig Sheppard giving instructions to volunteers And then after we scarify with the rakes, we'll get some people to throw down some seed. And there's lots of people today which is great. Volunteers working with tools Tina Barzo Audio I think some of the benefits for volunteers are the connections that they make with each other and with the park staff, like the trail crew and just getting that behind the scenes backstage pass. Craig Sheppard So we can just pull it down a little bit and we'll match that one - yeah, that'd be great. Interview with volunteer It's kind of steep here so you have to keep your balance, but mostly I'm just enjoying myself working with other people and knowing that we're doing something that is helpful. interview with Tina Barzo We're putting together half day and full day activities for people who want to do something hands-on, have a lot of fun, get outside and make a big difference here in the park. text Tina Barzo - Banff National Park - Leader of Volunteer Engagement Interview with Craig Sheppard Living in Banff has been pretty good, seeing lots of people I know and everyone has really positive feedback, happy to see that this local trail is getting the attention that it's been needing for quite some time. This is kind of the local Banff treadmill or stairmaster. Interview with volunteer Just the type of work - very fun to do, physically fit and then you get to see your results at the end is always nice and knowing that you made a difference. Craig Sheppard demonstrating work that's been done What you can see here is one of the shortcut areas, we've laid down some matting, we've raked it, scarified it, seeded it, put down some wild grass seed and then put this matting on top of it and then by dragging some deadfall across it as well it's hopefully deterring people from walking down the shortcut area. Interview with Craig Sheppard The trails here in Banff, especially Tunnel, they're really, really well used - well loved and therefore well used. But it's really important to stay on the trail so that the trail is here for a long time to come.
