Jon Sweetman off screen: My name is Jon Sweetman and I’m a northern ecologist with Parks Canada.

Jon Sweetman: This park is incredible as an aquatic ecologist to work on. There’s literally thousands and thousands of lakes across this landscape. This is a collaborative project between professors at Wilfred Laurier University and Waterloo University and Parks Canada, and over the next few years we’re going to be going out and routinely sampling a series of lakes.

Jon Sweetman: So right now it’s spring, so this is June but ice has just come off these lakes within the last couple of days and so we’re trying to get a first snapshot of what the lakes look like. We’ll come back in the end of July and then early September so sort of mid-growing season and then at the fall at the end.

Jon’s voice over off screen: Global warming is obviously a big threat here. It’s a little difficult to say what might happen to this park.

[Jon and other scientists in lab environment filtering and analyzing water samples]
Jon’s voice off screen: This study is going to take over the next five years and the idea is to get a base line of what’s happening in change and maybe get an idea of what processes might cause change.

Jon Sweetman: I work as an aquatic ecologist for parks, my specialty is in northern parks and Wapusk is, for me I think, a great park because it’s got a lot of water. I specialize in looking at pond ecosystems and things so it’s really fantastic because it’s such a great place to work.
