Male on screen: I find a lot of changes from the past.

Tommy: There are lots of new kinds of plants growing. We have a glacier up here around these parts, and it’s melting. It used to be a really big glacier and it’s getting smaller.

Chantal on screen: So their memories of weather are not just ‘the wind was like this, and the temperature was like that,’ it’s associated with the activities that they were doing.

Chantal voice off screen: And then based on some of the changes here then there are some of the activities that they would be doing differently.

Tommy: My name is TommyAnatunuk I am from George River, originally from Killiniq and we are in the national park of Torngat KakKasuangita SilakKijapvinga and this place is called kANGIDLUASUk.

Tommy: I was born in Killiniq right up North from here. We used to go hunting every summer with our parents, with the whole family and we stayed for the whole summer camping in the area.

Chantal voice off screen: My name is Chantal Ouimet I am a monitoring ecologist with Parks Canada. I work with the Northern National Parks.

Chantal voice off screen: In order to survive as human beings, we need the natural systems and to be able to have natural systems that are good for us, we have to understand them. The scientific data especially in the North, is limited, we don’t have a lot of information from the past. We don’t go very far in the past. The Inuit have memories from a longer time ago.

Tommy voice off screen: The evidence of Inuit ways from thousands of years have been found in this park. It has been found from all over the places, and still today we use the lifestyle.

Chantal voice off screen: It’s coarse information because they’ll know if it was generally warmer or generally colder, but it’s information that we don’t have as scientists. The goal is still the same thing; it’s understanding the environment so that we can live in it and also understanding how we effect the environment. And so that’s both the goal of science and the goal of traditional knowledge.

Tommy: And we’re starting to understand how we’re going to manage the place, how it’s going to be and there’s a lot of researches up here and we are learning a lot.
