Darroch: Yes.
voice off screen: Can you tell me where we’re off to?”

Darroch Whitaker: We are headed to Ivitak Valley on Nachvack Fjord to try to install some permafrost monitoring equipment.
Voice off camera: And who are these lovely people you have with you?

Darroch: We’ve got Caroline Duchesne and Wendy Sladen from the Geological Survey of Canada and Jobie Unatweenuk, our bear monitor, and in front we have Jason, a student who is coming to help us today, and Neil the pilot. So we’re on our way to Ivitak Valley which is one of our focal watershed for the park, we’re going to land in an old marine sediment deposit there. One of our challenges is finding rock free soil so that we can get equipment down to several meters below the soil surface to monitor the subsoil temperatures and permafrost conditions so we’re hoping this will be a good site.
Voice off camera: Great, so why monitor permafrost?

Darroch: Permafrost is really important for a whole range of ecosystem conditions. So, for example, it can have a large effect on hydrology, erosion, plant growth, and of course plant growth then can affect a whole host of other organisms, wildlife and things like that, and nutrient cycling, and even nutrients going into the river so char and things like that, so a very critical component of the function of the ecosystems up here.

Darroch: Do you want me to point this out on the map here?
Voice off camera: Yeah, what is that?
Darroch: So we’re going to fly down, we’re coming from the South, we’re going to fly down the McCormick river valley and then we’re going to turn left and fly up this valley and around to here and the blue here is actually the glacier, Superduksawak Glacier so we’re going to do a turn around there and then head back out. Where we’re going to be working is at the intersection of the two valleys.
Voice off camera: And so this is the McCormick Valley, but this is the Ivitak watershed?

Darroch: Ivitak is the traditional, the Inuit name of the valley but McCormick, depending on which map you look at, is a more recent name that has been applied to it but we’re trying to go back to using Inuit names where we can so we refer to it as Ivitak valley now.
