Canal’s path users

Remember that you are sharing the path with hundreds of cyclists, in-line skaters, walkers and runners. By adopting responsible behaviour, you minimize the risk of an accident.

Before you leave

Inspect your bicycle regularly, check the condition of the brakes and tires, and ensure that it is equipped with the mandatory visibility equipment.

If you ride in the dark, think about equipping your bicycle with headlights: they will light up the path and help other users see you clearly.

A bicycle in good condition will allow you to travel efficiently and safely. Wear a helmet and any other safety equipment appropriate for your activity.

On the path

Be courteous

• Ride single file when you are in a group
• Yield the right of way
• Greet people who cross your path, and smile!

Signal your intentions

• Ride on the right side of the road and avoid zigzagging
• Cyclists, use hand signals
• To pass, indicate your presence, in a friendly manner, or use a bell
• Leave as much space as possible between you and the person you are passing

Be careful

• Ride at a reasonable speed, tailored to the density of the traffic, and respect the limit of 20 km/h
• Remain attentive to your environment. Leave your earphones at home and be particularly focused at intersections, bridges, walkways and in tunnels
• Respect mandatory stops and other posted obligations

At the Lachine Canal

In the spring and fall, watch out for black ice, especially when approaching tunnels or in shaded areas.

At the Chambly Canal

Keep an eye on the road surface, which can be uneven, and be careful not to skid. Steer clear of the edge of the walls and the rock taluses that border the canal.
