The Water Management Program

Operational Cycle

Water management along the Trent-Severn Waterway must take into account the different characteristics of the three watersheds in the system. This section outlines operational considerations by season and by watershed.

The water management program follows an annual cycle of operation augmented by over 100 years of recorded water levels, flows, and weather data, as well as new technology. Water levels, water current velocities, and precipitation data from hydrometric stations are accessed by computer and analyzed on a daily and sometimes hourly basis by the Water Control Engineer. Lakes throughout the system must be at certain levels at different times of the year to meet management objectives; various management tools such as water levels and regulation curves provide targets for the Water Control Engineer.
