Backgrounder - Hastings Swing Bridge Construction
Parks Canada will be replacing the Hastings Swing Bridge. The Agency’s priorities during this project are to ensure that the bridge is safe, that disruption is minimal, and that the Village of Hastings and its surrounding communities will have a sound link now and well into the future.
The Hastings Swing Bridge allows County Road 45 to span the Trent-Severn Waterway at Lock 18 in the Village of Hastings. A detailed assessment following repairs revealed that the bridge has ongoing structural and mechanical issues. With engineering advice, it was determined that replacing the bridge is the most practical response. Compared to repairing the existing bridge, replacement will mean a shorter closure, lower costs, and a bridge that will serve the community for decades longer.
This estimated $4.5 million investment in the Hastings Swing Bridge is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to the sustainability of heritage canals and to the communities that they link.
