Celebrate Canada Day at Fort St. Joseph & Sault Ste. Marie Canal
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario – June 27, 2012 – On July 1st, be sure to visit our two local Parks Canada National Historic Sites. In celebration of Canada Day, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal and Fort St. Joseph will be hosting a variety of interesting activities, fun for the whole family.
At the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, we are celebrating culture. Costumed interpreters will be teaching children’s games from the early 1900s. There will be special activities in commemoration of the centennial of our wonderful city. Free tours will focus on the Canal’s history and its role in the development of Sault Ste. Marie. The Métis Nation of Ontario will be on-site to share many fascinating aspects of Métis culture.
The Canal Visitor Centre will be open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on July 1st. Activities are scheduled from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Call Visitor Services at 705-941-6205 for more information. Details are also on-line at www.pc.gc.ca/sault.
Join Fort St. Joseph staff in celebrating our nation’s birthday on the shores of Lake Huron. Activities are scheduled throughout the day and into the evening. Participate in guided tours of the site, take in our nature trails, watch historical- themed movies, and experience Parks Canada’s new Xplorer program for kids. Stay to marvel at the night skies amongst the candle-lit structures of old Fort St. Joseph and to enjoy the fireworks display, presented by the Township of Jocelyn. Don’t forget to bring chairs or blankets!
