Black Rapids Wharves Replacement

In spring 2018, Parks Canada completed the replacement of the Black Rapids Wharves. Work included the demolition and reconstruction of the timber cribbing and concrete decks. The wharves were an in-kind replacement to preserve their cultural value.

The replacement of the Black Rapids Wharves is part of Parks Canada’s infrastructure program, a $3 billion dollars investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada.

About Black Rapids Lock:

Black Rapids Lock was built in 1827 along the Rideau Canal in an area where the rapids dropped 1.37 metres over a 2.4 kilometre stretch. The lock was built out of local limestone sourced from a quarry on the east bank of the river, opened specifically to supply the lock construction. In 1829 the lockmaster’s house was completed, the dam and artificial channel completion followed thereafter.
